Can I remove native or protected trees?

Trees that have been identified as significant due to their heritage, botanical or cultural value have certain rules around pruning and removing them that applies to private properties. A significant tree can only be removed if it is dead or it has lost structural integrity and can’t be improved over time. Before removing the tree, you need to submit a Tree Removal Certificate to the council to confirm that it meets the criteria for removal.

When is it time to remove a tree?

When problems arise for your trees, it can be difficult to know when it’s the right time to remove it. If your tree is significantly damaged in its trunk or root system, it will likely need to be removed. As there are many factors that contribute to a removal such as tree health, location, and potential hazards, we recommend consulting with a qualified arborist who can inspect and evaluate your tree to help you determine how to proceed with your tree.
